I didn’t think that Sicario needed a sequel, to be honest, but now that I’ve just seen the first trailer for Sicario 2: Soldado, I’m quite excited.
Benicio Del Toro’s character, Alejandro, was pretty clearly the best part of Sicario and it appears he will be given a larger role this time around. He will be joined again by Matt Graver, played by Josh Brolin, and it looks like the two of them will be waging war once more upon the Mexican drug cartels.
This new trailer suggests that Soldado will be heavier on the action this time around with shootouts and explosions aplenty. Now, whether that’s good or bad remains to be seen, but, as I wrote in a previous article, I did think that one of Sicario‘s weaker elements was turning the character of Alejandro into an unstoppable hitman. It looks as if the sequel is going further into action-movie territory and away from the more thought-provoking elements of the first film, but if the action is as gritty and as well-shot as it was in Sicario that might not be a bad thing.
